Maundy Thursday

  • Westminster Presbyterian Church 10 North Edgelawn Drive Aurora, IL, 60506 United States (map)

Westminster's Maundy Thursday Service, scheduled for 7:00 PM, commemorates a significant event in our Christian faith:

Jesus shared the Passover meal with His disciples, an occasion also known as the Last Supper.

Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, which means “mandate.” In the upper room (John 13–17), Jesus gave His disciples the new commandment (i.e., the new mandate) after washing their feet.

This new commandment is found in John 13:31-35. Having set an example by washing their feet, the Lord Jesus told the Twelve: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

The New Testament's commandment to love and serve others is not unique. In the old covenant law, God told His people, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). What is distinct about the “new commandment” is that Jesus is fulfilling it in His sacrificial life and death for the redemption of His people.

No one but Christ had ever kept the command to "love your neighbor as yourself.”

Through His sacrificial service, Jesus fulfilled Leviticus 19:18 for the redemption of His people and set the example of what it means to love and serve others. Ligonier's Ministry
